In the summer of 2002, at the height of the Second Intifada, Nablus was under a very strict curfew. The IDF would give a 24h warning of when the curfew would be lifted, which happened at haphazard intervals, sometimes after several days of lock-down. When that happened, people swarmed to the market, trying to stock up necessities for an undetermined number of days.
My volunteer group, all Italians, shared a large apartment with a couple of local students. Our downstairs neighbors became our closest acquaintances very soon, and for a month we shared most of our time, learning how Nabulsi people had managed to create an environment of normal life as best as they could within a completely irrational situation.
